Family Fun Day raises £350 for Fylde Coast Disability Awareness
Families from all over the Fylde Coast attended a fun day in Thornton on Sunday 6 May to raise vital funds for new charity Fylde Coast Disability Awareness. The sun shone from the official opening by the Mayor and Mayoress of Wyre, Councillor David and Mrs Bannister and the stars shone too, in the guise of the wonderful performers who gave their time to entertain during the day and later that night.
Highlights of the day included outstanding vocal performances from ‘Dame Tilly Trott’ actor, Ian Fox and Martin Finn, who despite being severely autistic sang with confidence and perfection. Chubbz entertained the children with his magic show and balloon twisting and visitors were kept busy with the BBQ, side stalls and bouncy slides outside.
Later on there were performances from 11yr old local guitarist Luke Fletcher, upcoming band Carleton Crossing and Scott Slattery serenaded the crowds with his Michael Buble tribute act till late. Lee Clark of Quality Entertainments Agency kept the crowds tapping their feet from noon till midnight.
Lesley, a keen fundraiser said of the event, ‘It was an awesome day and night. Well done to everyone who made it possible.’ Joanne, a disabled mum of two added, ‘You all made me and the girls feel very welcome and was not once stared at or pointed at by children which is a first for us. We really enjoyed ourselves….’
Tina Mulgrew, Chair of FCDA said, “We’d like to thank everyone for supporting the fun day and to those who provided raffle prizes and other services that helped us raise an amazing £350 for our project. It was so nice to be able to provide an inclusive event that everyone could take enjoyment from. The funds will help us to provide support, advice and information for the disabled community, their families and carers in the Fylde Coast area.”

More about FCDA:
Fylde Coast Disability Awareness (FCDA) is a volunteer led, charitable association, established to provide support, information and advice, for the benefit of the disabled community, their families and carers in the Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Coast area.
According to the Office for Disability Issues, over ten million people in Great Britain have limiting long-term illnesses, physical impairment or disabilities. FCDA, as an association, feel as though disability is an under-exposed issue. Many disabled people and carers are unaware of the services available to them in the area, and sadly they never connect with the valuable support that is there. We want to bring that support to the people in one place rather than them having to look for it.
With a dedicated team of volunteers, FCDA plans is connecting the disabled community, their families and carers with services offering practical solutions for independent living and those offering recreational and leisure activities. We are achieving this through our website, a regular newsletter, and drop in coffee mornings and inclusive fundraising and awareness events in the Fylde Coast area.
As with any new charity, funds are limited and donations of raffle prizes, bric-a-brac we can sell for funds or time given to support the group and volunteer are all greatly appreciated.
These are the type of activities and projects that FCDA is intending to provide:
• To hold an annual inclusive activity day
• To create a networking facility to enable the sharing of information through various media
• To provide the opportunity for the wider community to integrate into the disabled community
• To raise funds that will support our programme of events
• To develop links with the Local Authority, NHS and other public sector agencies that can offer support on issues affecting our daily lives
• To offer appropriate support to members of the community who are disabled, their families and carers
• To showcase what disabled people can achieve in the field of the arts, sports and entertainment
FCDA was initially formed as a Facebook group in January 2012 and had 16 members. It was soon apparent that in order to achieve the intended goals, a committee was needed. An initial meeting was held on 22 February 2012, attended by a few local residents who now form the group’s Committee and representatives from Aiming Higher, ALS, Blackpool Heritage and Direct Payments.
We now have nearly 400 Facebook group followers, which is increasing daily and have had offers of support from local businesses including, West Coast Sound and Lighting, Mountain Monkeys, The Athena Hotel and many more.
We will be holding a variety of fundraising activities throughout the year including family fun days, psychic nights, a Fair Trade fashion show, craft fayres and raffles and hope that the local community will join in and support us wherever possible.
